Learning Experience 9: The Teacher as an Effective Administrator

Writer's picture: Irene IsipIrene Isip

Our learning journey now brings us to observe how tests are actually administered by teachers in a flexible learning setup. This experience is expected to guide us in picking up those good practices that assist learners in taking tests properly. If tests are not administered well, the information expected to be derived from the testing process for improving teaching and learning may not materialize.

Observation

Make an appointment with your Resource Person to allow you to be an observer when he/she is due to administering a test (e.g. quiz or exam) to the class. Answer the following questions.

1. Give the actual instructions given by the teacher to the class.

Simplify without zero and negative exponents.

2. How was the test administered?

It was administered through online meetings, using google meet, and with the use of Jamboard application that served as a blackboard in a classroom. The instruction was stated and the problems/equations to be solved are written on the board. After that, the teacher gave the students limited and specific time to finish it.

3. What did the teacher do while students were taking the test?

The teacher waited for the students to finish the test and while doing that, he also reminded them to ask if they have clarification regarding the test and informed them of their remaining time in answering.

4. How did the teacher finish the testing session?

After their allotted time ended, the teacher solves the problem together with the students. He lets them share their answers and how they arrived at that answer. Before he ended the testing session, he asked them if they followed the procedure, if they got the correct answer and if ever they have misconceptions and clarifications.

Reflection

1. Why is it important to administer a test properly? Consider the purpose of the assessment.

a. For the learners

It is important because it is the reflection of our learning which is the fruit of our effort in understanding a certain topic. In here, the student will know if s/he is still doing well and if s/he can still catch up with the lesson. This will measure the student’s learning progress and by this, they may know which category needs more focus or effort in learning. As of todays’ mode of education, the student may cheat on assessments but it is not the teacher who they are fooling big time but themselves.

b. For the teacher

It is important because teachers are to test the level of understanding or comprehension of the students as part of teaching. Here, the teacher may know which topic or lesson is quite difficult for them, this will be the teacher’s basis on which part to put focus on or provide more time in discussing. Also, as they say, your student's performance may be associated with the teacher’s efficiency. Therefore, one may say that the higher the quality of teacher’s performance, the better the student’s grades or performance. This is the reason why it is vital to properly administer a test, to have valid and reliable proof of students’ comprehension that is relative to the teacher’s performance.

2. What consequences may result if tests are not administered properly?

We may end up failing to measure what is intended to measure. The reason for administering a test may not be satisfied for we may have a non-reliable and non-valid result.

3. Administering a test in a flexible learning setup is not easy. Write some standards for future teachers to follow when administering a test in this setup.

Inform the students of the coverage and the parts of the test which are to be taken and also the time allotted for the test. Remind the dos and don’ts with the corresponding consequence/s. Writes/States the instruction clear and easy to understand. Observe them while they are taking the test. Remind them again if they are reaching the last couple of minutes.
